The Hong Kong Prize and the HK Global Development Prize

The Hong Kong Prize is an award sponsored by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. It aims to recognize scholars who have made significant contributions in the field of language sciences. It is named after the late Professor Yuen Ren Chao who was a distinguished linguist and talented humanistic scholar, poet, composer, translator, and educator. He was a leading figure in the development of Chinese language studies and influenced scholars in China, Asia, and around the world.

The prize provides recognition and support for outstanding research in science and technology innovation, encourages more scientists to work on important scientific fields, and promotes the transformation of scientific discoveries into practical applications that benefit people. The winners of the prize are chosen by a panel of experts from various sectors, including industry, government, academia, and the public. They are given the opportunity to present their ideas at a high-profile ceremony attended by representatives of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the sponsoring enterprise.

Aside from promoting academic research, the prize also promotes the study of Hong Kong’s unique historical status and its relationship with China and Asia. The competition is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, and they are encouraged to investigate different aspects of Hong Kong’s history and culture. They must conduct independent investigations, and submit a written report to be judged by a panel of judges. The judges will evaluate the reports on their relevance, systematic use of collected materials, and objectivity in analysis.

Each year, the Hong Kong Phil receives generous financial support from numerous donors. The HK Phil extends its heartfelt thanks to all supporters including the Government of Hong Kong SAR, Principal Patron the Swire Group, and music-lovers from Hong Kong and around the globe. They are committed to continuing their efforts in promoting world-class musical performances and recordings, as well as education programmes.

The HK Global Development Prize is an international competition that gathers innovative ideas to shape the role of Hong Kong in advancing sustainable development and international cooperation. It is a great platform for participants to showcase their ideas and initiatives, and it offers them an excellent chance to make a difference in the lives of people in need.
