Domino’s Restaurants Embraces a Culture of Innovation
A domino is a flat rectangular block used in games of chance and skill. Each piece has from one to six pips or dots; 28 such pieces form a complete set. A domino’s purpose is to knock over another piece, or a line of them, in a sequence called a “domino rally.” It’s an example of the principle of cascading events, where a small action triggers a chain reaction that influences what comes next.
Lily Hevesh started playing with dominoes as a young girl. Her grandparents had the classic 28-piece set, and she loved arranging them in straight or curved lines and flicking the first one over to see the entire pattern unravel. She’s now a professional domino artist who has created spectacular displays for movie and television shows, including a rainbow-colored spiral that used 12,000 dominoes. Hevesh also has a popular YouTube channel where she posts videos of her amazing creations.
She explains that she tests each section of her domino display before putting them all together. This allows her to make precise corrections if the setup doesn’t work as planned. Then she films each section in slow motion to check for flaws. For her largest 3-D arrangements, she even makes test versions that are a fraction of the size to ensure the dominoes will fall right where they should.
Domino’s leadership structure is also built around listening to employees and customers. The company’s CEO, Don Meij, has appeared on Undercover Boss where he sent executives to Domino’s restaurants to see how workers handle customer complaints and solve problems on the fly.
Meij has instilled a culture of innovation and collaboration in the company by encouraging employees to come up with new ideas. He also believes that the best way to improve a business is to listen to the customer and then take action.
In order to continue to grow, Domino’s also focuses on attracting the most talented employees. They provide training and opportunities for advancement for their employees to give them a competitive advantage in the industry. They also strive to keep their employees happy and engaged by implementing team-building activities and rewarding programs.
Domino’s also prioritizes the safety of their employees. In a recent article, Domino’s reported that the company has a goal of zero workplace injuries. To accomplish this goal, they provide safety training for employees and offer health and wellness benefits to help employees stay healthy.
