What Is Result SGP?
Result sgp is a number that indicates student growth on MCAS tests over time. It is calculated by comparing the performance of a student with that of their academic peers statewide. This is done by using up to two years of test data. Academic peers are identified from statewide data on the student’s grade, class, and gender, as well as the educational programs they attend (e.g., sheltered English immersion and special education).
Students’ individual SGP percentiles measure their performance over time in relation to academic peers with similar scores. A SGP score of 50 or higher equates to a student scoring at the top half of the distribution. On the other hand, a SGP score below 50 means that a student is below average in comparison to their peers.
To calculate SGP, student results on MCAS tests are compared to the scores of their academic peers from the previous year and the year before. This method allows for the interpretation of a student’s growth based on their experience since 8th grade. However, it’s important to remember that this method only shows a snapshot of one year of growth. The next year’s SGP percentages may be very different if the student experiences different learning opportunities or different MCAS tests.
As a result of these trends, some students may demonstrate more or less growth than their academic peers each year. During the covid-19 pandemic, for example, many students across Massachusetts demonstrated less overall growth in their academic skills than expected. The average student growth percentages reported by the state do not reflect these changes in SGPs.
The SGP percentages reported by the state are not meant to be interpreted as an indicator of a student’s ability or achievement in a specific subject. Instead, they are a way for parents and teachers to compare their students’ progress with that of other students in the same grade level across Massachusetts and the United States. This information is useful for making decisions about the curriculum, instruction, and support that a student needs. In addition, this information can help parents and educators identify any gaps in their student’s education. These gaps can be addressed through interventions, such as extracurricular activities, tutoring, or counseling.
